Calculating the Costs of Known and Unknown Workplace Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) Risk
Date and Time: Monday, October 23, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Presenter: Blake McGowan, Solution Executive, VelocityEHS
Description: Poor workplace ergonomics costs businesses in the United States billions of dollars each year related to workplace musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)—the equivalent of $376M (USD) per week. Quantifying the lagging costs of existing workplace MSDs is a normal, standardized process. However, quantifying potential, future workplace MSD costs is uncommon, and the methods are not fully developed.
In this session, two novel methods are presented for calculating the potential future workplace MSD costs associated with both known and unknown MSD risks, for office and industrial settings. Examples will be provided and calculations from the audience will be conducted. The assumptions, benefits, and challenges of both methods will be discussed with the audience. Participants will have time to critique the methods and offer constructive feedback to further develop the proposed methods. If interested, participants will be provided access to the updated methods after feedback has been integrated.
